Schwinn - Chicago headbadges were used on bikes that weren't necessarily built in Chicago, because the company was headquartered there. One other reflection, how can it be an 83 when everything that I have referred to place it as a 79? The headbadge also says Chicago. Scooper has catalogs (and a wealth of knowledge on this stuff), so he might be able to pinpoint it for you also.

The 12.2 designation was the weight of the complete bike, in kilograms. Example: 1303 would indicate it was assembled on the 130th day of 1983, assuming it's an '80's bike.Įdit: I also remember Bob Hufford (who knows a LOT about Schwinns and Schwinn serial numbers) saying that, at least at one time, a serial number starting with 'SA' indicated a le tour. The first three will indicate the numerical day of the year the bike was assembled, and the last digit will indicate the last number of the year. And the third digit in your serial # might indicate 1983.Look on the headbadge and try and find four small numbers stamped on it. The reason I say that is that I remember from an earlier discussion, we determined that '83 was the first year for the Traveler to have a chromoly frame, but it only had chromoly 'main tubes,' not the stays.

I don't understand your statement that you can't find a serial number that starts with 'S' when the number you list starts with 'S.' ?.I could be way wrong about it being a Traveler, but it's fun to guess. I'm gonna take a wild guess and say '83 Traveler, frame built in Jan.
